The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety regularly conducts research projects in order to identify the most serious risks on the road. A comprehensive study recently completed by the organization explored more than 2,000 vehicle accidents affecting drivers between the ages 16 and 19 to determine the leading causes of these accidents. Data was examined for crashes occurring between 2007 and 2015.
According to that study, passengers were inside a vehicle in up to one-third of crashes and crashes were more likely to occur during the week. Although seatbelt use among teens was relatively high as reported in the study at 93.5%, distractions are a leading cause of vehicle accidents. More than half of car accidents or 58.5% involving a teen driver had to do with distractions behind the wheel. Teen drivers are most often distracted by something in the vehicle although passengers are the number one cause of teen driving distractions.
Mobile phone use came in at number two and looking at something inside the vehicle ranked as number three. If you or someone you know has recently been involved in an accident with a teen driver, because that driver was not paying attention, you may be entitled to recover compensation with the help of a knowledgeable personal injury lawyer. Do not hesitate to get help from someone who has handled cases like this before as soon as possible. Teen driving can be a great way to help a child gain more independence, but only when it’s done so safely. Since teens don’t have as much experience on the road, they are more likely to be involved in crashes.
Teens are the most likely to be involved in fatal accidents for several different reasons, but all of them can give cause for concern for parents as well as other people on the road. It’s important to ensure that you file a police report as soon as possible if you or someone you know has been seriously injured in an accident involving a teen driver. There are many ways that your life can be forever changed by a distracted driving accident involving a teen, but the one thing in your control during this overwhelming time is being able to get your questions answered from a knowledgeable personal injury lawyer.
